Personally I love of Master of Orion 2 and there are quite a few people on the boards here who prefer MoO1. I would say Master of Orion is closer to Sins despite being turn-based rather than real time. ![]() Master of Orion 1 & 2 are 4X turn-based strategy games while Star Control 1 & 2 are more action/adventure with some strategy thrown in. I'm completely in your hands on this one! Well aside from both being space-set classics, they are very, very different. I have no foreknowledge about any of them the most similar thing I've played is Sins of a Solar Empire and loved it. I still replay it frequently, my only regret is that I can't experience it for the first time ever again.Atrok477: I've heard incredible things about this two games series and was thinking of purchasing one of them. Really uniquely clever and a landmark in game design. For example, on first glance, the Pkunk ship sucks - it's fast and maneuverable but firepower is weak and you can only do a little damage at a time - but if you get destroyed, it has a small chance to resurrect itself, meaning that if you get lucky then you're getting 10 ships for the price of one. The different ships in the battle scenes all have different nuances that a skilled player can exploit they're all cleverly balanced without feeling too rock/paper/scissors-y - they all have weird quirks that make them uniquely valuable. The humor fits in well without destroying the urgency of the plot. Nothing has really matched it, all of the different elements come through perfectly. I'm of the opinion that this is one of the best games of all time. I have had trouble with the touch screen controls, but a Bluetooth enabled controller would fix that right up. Give it a try, you will enjoy it.ĮDIT- It also looks like it can be played for free on Android devices too, just search under Ur-quan Masters. The game can be played for free on PC (in OPs link) on the Wii from the wiibrew site or the 3DO version if you want to shell out the cash. And I think many games have built upon what it made. The first time I played mass effect I felt that Star Control 2 had influenced it heavily (not a bad thing at all). It felt like you were actually on a grand quest to save humanity. This game had you mining planets and collecting samples of alien life from planets as currency and it felt fun. You will lose in the long run, but I think that's the beauty of it. I recommend playing it the first time with no walkthrough or anything. He also studied biolinguistics so this stuff is right up his alley. The Orz are particularly memorable, partially because they are so strange and partially because the voice actor, Greg Johnson has lots of experience with this sort of stuff. There are so many strange alien species to interact with and the voice acting is done by some serious top notch professionals so it just draws you in. But its voice acting is where it really shines. I feel like it was ground breaking, especially for the time. I first played this game on the 3DO (anyone remember that system?).
